Now available to order as a $300 upgrade for most new US models, BMW becomes the latest automotive manufacture to offer Apple’s smart phone car connectivity. Absent from the list of CarPlay compatible BMWs at this time are the M5 Sedan, the 440i Coupe, and surprisingly the electric i3 and i8 models.

While being good news for those in the market to purchase a new BMW, at the moment it is looking like BMW will not be offering an upgrade option to those who previously purchased an earlier 2016 model. Theoretically you might be able to purchase the newest version of BMW’s iDrive navigation system and try and retrofit that unit, but it will end up running you upwards of $3,000 not including the labor to install.
