For those with the latest iPhone (XR, XS or XS Max) you’ll probably want to get the latest iOS 12.1.3 update. With this update Apple has fixed a bug that would suddenly disconnect your phone from CarPlay. Having personally experienced this, the only we found to reconnect would be to turn the car off and then back on this is a much-welcomed update.
In addition to the CarPlay fix Apple has also released fixes for Messages, iPad Pros and the HomePod. Below is the full list of updates:

This release also includes bug fixes for HomePod. This update:

-Addresses an issue that could cause Siri to stop listening
