After being the lone major auto manufacturer to NOT offer Apple CarPlay in their vehicles, Toyota announced during the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit that they would bring CarPlay compatibility to select 2019 Toyota and Lexus models.
Using the Toyota Entune 3.0 or Lexus Enform 2.0 infotainment systems, the CarPlay compatible vehicles will use a wired USB connection (would have been nice to have wireless but something is better then nothing). The 2019 Toyota Avalon is slated to be the first model to offer CarPlay; but it’s worth noting that the 2018 Camry and 2018 Sienna both have the Entune 3.0 system so in theory we might see a retroactive update to allow older models to utilize CarPlay.
Notably absent however is any mention of Android Auto compatibility, while recently announced at the 2018 CES show that Toyota’s Entune 3.0 systems would feature Amazon’s Alexa virtual assistant it looks as Google is getting shut out of Toyota’s ecosystem for now.
